ANKARA LOS ANGELES FESTIVAL (AFLA), LOS ANGELES (CA), SEPTEMBER 11TH-12TH 2015

image

If you weren’t at Ankara Festival Los Angeles 2015, you missed out on a wonderful cultural experience delving into different parts of Africa with high-end and ready-to-wear fashion, amazing dancers, musicians, food and most of all: BEAUTIFUL AFRICAN PEOPLE IN BEAUTIFUL ANKARA CLOTHING. The melanin was definitely on fleek and so were all of the ankara prints and patterns. The energy in the atmosphere was on a higher vibratory plane than any other fashion show. You were first introduced to the show by flags from different African countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Kenya. Seeing the different flags drew a sense of pride. For the fashion show, down the runway was an eclectic mix of models and designers such as Sania Josiah, Kabeh Ojo, Treasure Eutopia, Fantabela and Tinz, my favorite line which consisted of well tailored suits for men and modernized shirt dresses for women all in Dashiki print, everything in the line you wanted to have in your closet. In between some segments, the house was rocked by rhythmic beats and lyrics from African music artists such as Meaku. The crowd was also entertained by dancers shaking it to the drum beat like only our people know how. There were also a couple of comedy skits, one in which was a “Coming to America” themed skit that involved twins. The most amazing part of the show was the energy and the people, proud African people shining bright in every aspect, like always. It was a very well-organized journey that you didn’t want to end. The next Ankara Fest will be in New York, in May 2016! Will you be there? I know I will!

REGGAE NIGHT: BOB MARLEY’S ROOTS, ROCK, REGGAE – A 70TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION, HOLLYWOOD BOWL (CA) – AUGUST 16TH 2015

image

For this year’s reggae party, sons Ziggy and Stephen Marley lead the celebration of their legendary father’s 70th birthday and the best of the roots rock tradition. They will be joined by Inner Circle and the Skatalites with KCRW’s Jeremy Sole as a host. STEPHEN MARLEY, GHETTO YOUTHS CREW, REGGAE ON THE RIVER, JULY 31ST-AUGUST 2ND 2015

image

Stephen Marley was definitely the highlight of the festival and delivered by far the best musical and vocal performance with his trademark Marley lionesque voice. He delivered classic Bob tunes such as “Iron Lion” and his newest hits “Rock stone” and “No cigarette smoking in my room” much to the great delight of the crowd. His protégés known as the Ghetto Youths Crew performed before him with Wayne Marshall somewhat reminiscent of Dennis Brown (Bob’s favorite artist) in looks and voice and rendering a funny version of “Southern California” which revolved around Ganja and police search, Jo Mersa (Stephen’s son) is more on the Dancehall Ragga side while Skip (Cedella’s son) is definitely very reminiscent of his grandfather Bob and uncle Stephen in his singing style and guitar-playing. This was definitely the event that showcased the next Marley generation.

CHAM, CECILE, TARRUS RILEY, REGGAE ON THE RIVER, GARBERVILLE (CA), JULY 31ST-AUGUST 2ND 2015

image

Baby Cham now officially Cham performed for the first time at Reggae on The River 20 years ago and arguably had the best performance of the Festival with his gruffy voice, hyper dance & energy as well as lyrical ability. Cecile gave a Rihanna/Beyonce-like sexy performance much to the delight of the male audience but also addressed female relationship issues. Tarrus Riley is a true singer and did that to the best of his ability with conscious and love lyrics, while acknowledging his 90s Dancehall roots. He also paid homage to the greats such as Michael Jackson with his rendition of “Billie Jean”.

COLLIE BUDZ, ALBOROSIE, REGGAE ON THE RIVER, GARBERVILLE (CA), JULY 31ST-AUGUST 2ND 2015

image

Collie Budz delivered a great performance setting things off on Friday night while Alborosie closed out the Festival majestically and beautifully on Sunday night, proving Reggae transcends all racial boundaries as both artists are able to sing in Patois. Collie Budz sang his Dancehall anthems “Come around”, “Blind to you Haters” and enchanting rendition of Peter Tosh’s “Legalize it” which all give him much street credibility and respect. Alborosie is a true and energetic entertainer with his trademark thick dreadlocks which nearly touch the ground, he also utilizes them to poke fun at the crowd by using them as a firing weapon or rope which makes his own musicians laugh. His voice is lionesque and reminiscent of Buju Banton’s. Alborosie delivered great renditions of “Police in Helicopter” & “Crazy Baldhead” and even sang Italian opera, showing his range as an artist and celebrating his roots.

EMMANUEL JAL, BASSEKOU KOUYATE & NGONI BA, REGGAE ON THE RIVER, GARBERVILLE (CA), JULY 31ST-AUGUST 2ND 2015

image

The 31st Annual Reggae Festival featured an international and eclectic cast of artists from African countries such as the Sudan and Mali. Sudanese rapper and spoken word artist Emmanuel Jal offered conscious radical lyrics meant to awaken the crowd regarding the socio-political issues of his country which include war, violence and child exploitation with his poignant life story as a child soldier and refugee. He received numerous accolades and crowd participation. The Malian Family Ensemble which featured husband and wife Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba enchanted the crowd with their original Malian Blues singing, guitar and percussion using traditional instruments. You could clearly see and hear the African influence on Blues and Rock N’ Roll with the Jimmy Hendrix-like guitar-playing as well as sultry voice of Ngoni Ba. The youngest members of the Family ensemble also performed so well and energetically at the traditional guitars and talking drums that the crowd demanded an encore.

KING JAMMYS, DON CARLOS, THE CONGOS, REGGAE ON THE RIVER, GARBERVILLE (CA), JULY 31ST-AUGUST 2ND 2015

image

The 31st Annual Reggae On The River, longest running American Reggae Festival, featured 70s & 80s Conscious Roots powerhouses such as King Jammys Sound System, Don Carlos Ex Black Uhuru lead singer and founder as well as The Congos. These acts proved once again Reggae and consciousness are timeless and social issues of those times are still relevant. The Festival organizers did well mobilizing groups of different eras and geographical areas to please the diverse festival attendees.

KYMANI MARLEY, REGGAE ON THE MOUNTAIN, TOPANGA (CA), JULY 25TH-26TH 2015

image

Kymani Marley now a major Reggae Force to be reckoned with combined with being a member of Reggae’s First Family of course, closed out the Festival as he was its highlight. Kymani mainly focused on promoting his latest album Maestro but of course had to deliver some of his father’s classics such as Iron Lion and Redemption Song much to the delight of the crowd. He is also encouraging his son KJ to perform and brought his other sons on stage during his performance of Bob’s “One Love”. KJ Marley did a great job hyping up the stunned crowd with his energy and new school dancehall/hip hop influenced gangsta lyrics.KJ Marley is clearly a star on the rise.

REGGAE ON THE MOUNTAIN, TOPANGA (CA), JULY 25TH-26TH 2015

image

In its sixth year, the festival has made tremendous progress in regard to its organization and expansion to 2 stages, as well as implementation of Food and Art & Clothing sections. The line-up wasn’t as impressive as previous years though boasting superstars Kymani Marley, Alborosie and Marlon Asher on Sunday. Saturday featured mostly locals including Quinto Sole, JahGun, Ras Rebel etc…The beauty of this festival resides in its sense of close-knit community and lack of crowdiness and scenery up in the Topanga mountains.

SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL, BOONVILLE (CA), JUNE 19TH-21ST 2015

imageLuciano was definitely the highlight, in my eyes, of the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival with his mesmerizing Dennis Brown-inspired voice which has the power to draw tears of joy or compassion from audience members including myself. His message is of world peace, love and unity and he is very conscious of world political issues, fights for freedom and poverty. He also made the crowd laugh with his artistic and acrobatic dance moves and comedic acts close to stand-up comedy with funny autobiographical story-telling.

SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL, BOONVILLE (CA), JUNE 19TH-21ST 2015

imageThe Sierra Nevada World Music Festival took place as usual in the very rural setting of Boonville, surprisingly only  a couple of hours north of San Francisco but well-attended. The festival featured Reggae powerhouses such as Third World, Steel Pulse and Luciano to name a few. The festival also featured newcomers from a variety of places worldwide such as my fellow Senegalese countryman Meta and his Cornerstones, ex Ziggy back-up singer Jesse Royal, St-Lucia’s own Taj Weekes and a personal favorite of mine Nattali Rize & Notis. Nattali Rize was part of the opening acts and seemed like a cross between Nelly Furtado with her beautiful high-pitched voice, and Ani Di Franco in her musical talents at the guitar and conscious delivery, not to mention she’s a hand drum virtuoso. There were numerous performances throughout the venue by local African dance troops and numerous food, art and clothing vendors as well as campers from all over the country. Many rejoiced at the idea at continuing the party at the “Dancehall” with the Bay’s top sound systems which featured icons such as Yellowman.

Afro-Pop Diva Angelique Kidjo was also part of this eclectic festival. There were four main stages, various performance tents, food and craft vendors, all contained within a race track. “NAS: STILL ILLMATIC” – 2015 PANAFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL – LOS ANGELES (CA) – FEB 5TH-16TH 2015

image

This documentary is released 20 years after Nas’ first album release “Illmatic” considered one of the best Hip Hop albums of all-time. It focuses on Nasir Jones’ upbringing in the Queensbrige housing projects and how his childhood environment and parents’ background influenced his mind state at the time and thereby the lyrics of this classic album. Nas relates how his successful aims were to paint a vivid picture of NYC street life and put Queens “back on the Map” after one of its pioneering MCs “MC Shan” was “defeated” by “KRS ONE” from the South Bronx. The documentary also emphasizes his success as he’s considered one of the greatest of all-time. Nas, a high-school dropout, is not only enjoying commercial success but has also been embraced as a writer and poet by his contemporaries and by renowned academic institutions such as Harvard. This documentary is a must-see for any avid or moderate Hip Hop fan.

“FREEWAY CRACK IN THE SYSTEM” – 2015 PANAFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL – LOS ANGELES (CA) – FEB 5TH-16TH 2015

image

This documentary reveals how “Freeway Rick Ross” (Not to be confused with Rapper Rick Ross who utilizes his name as a moniker), a South Central teenager with humble beginnings and aspirations to become a tennis player, made his start as a drug dealer and introduced crack cocaine to the streets of Los Angeles and consequently America during the 80s Reaganomics era. His cocaine deals with Nicaraguans, seeking to use these funds to finance the Contras revolution in that country, allow Rick Ross with the help of childhood friends Cornell Ward and Norman Tillman to name a few, to rise to the rank of almost Billionaire King Pin. The latter two along with Film Director Marc Levin and Rick Ross’ mother Anne attended the event for support and Q&A since he did not participate in it. Ex Corrupt Narcotics officer Roberto Juarez also attended the event to further expose the CIA corrupt tactics and participation in the drug trade. “CITY OF GOD – 10 YEARS LATER” – 2015 PANAFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL – LOS ANGELES (CA) – FEB 5TH-16TH 2015

image   The “City of God – 10 years later” documentary produced by Carla Osorio focuses on the post-movie lives of the actors in the classic Brazilian movie “City of God” directed by Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund. The documentary is somewhat similar to the movie as it takes place in the slums called favelas where most of the actors still reside. Though the movie is critically-acclaimed worldwide with numerous awards and oscar nominations, the main actors such as Leandro Firmino (Li’l Ze) and Alexandre Rodrigues (Rocket) still live in the favelas and are still confronted to the struggle, poverty and crime of these areas. Now adults, some of the actors such as Douglas Silva (Li’l Ze as a child) are now living their lives as parents who must fend for their families but luckily starring in the subsequent TV series “City of Men”. Meanwhile, Alice Braga (Angelica) has starred in blockbusters such as “I am Legend” with Will Smith and Elysium with Matt Damon while Seu Jorge (Mane Galinha) a talented singer/rapper is enjoying local as well as international success. Therefore, the movie served as a stepping stone to some but also as a new burden to others who suffer being typecasted or not being able to find regular employment as they’re now associated with acting due to the popularity of the movie, considering most of them were amateurs shooting their first movie. The documentary gives us a glimpse of the harsh realities brazilian actors endure daily not only because of their profession but also because of their race, it also triggers mixed emotions linked to humor, hope, sadness, despair and success.

2015 PANAFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL (OPENING NIGHT) – LOS ANGELES (CA) – FEB 5TH-16TH 2015

image

PAFF opening night was star-studded and featured the Black Panther – Vanguard of The Revolution cast including its executive producer Stanley Nelson and original Black Panthers Mohammed Mubarak and Michael McCarthy. In attendance were also Black celebrity actors Isaiah Washington, Loretta Divine and Jimmy Jean-Louis who attend every year. The lovely Seraya McNeil of the new popular Fox show “Empire” was also in attendance. The documentary relates the impact the Black Power movement had on American Society since its inception in the late 60s, its history and struggles. The documentary provides much valuable information about its most pivotal members Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver and Fred Hampton to name a few and their stand-offs on the streets with the police, the CIA and armed protests at Congress halls. The Black Panther Movement’s history is rather impressive especially because of its members’ relative young ages (17-25), their political awareness and level of education, as well as their roles in protecting (Vigilante) and feeding the community of Oakland.

LONG BEACH JERK FEST, LONG BEACH (CA), SEPT 28TH 2014

image

Upcoming Dancehall Acts Blaze Mob and Chino McGregor (Right) did a great job setting the stage with great energy for legendary Reggae acts U-Roy, Johnny Osbourne, Freddie McGregor, The Abyssinians and Sister Carol. Dancehall, Lovers Rock and Conscious Reggae fans were in bliss, considering the festival included such pioneers in these Reggae sub-genres. There was also a great selection of Caribbean food on this “Doctor Dread’s Jerk” sponsored festival. This festival was a definite success despite off and on lighting issues the artists did a great job ignoring.

SALIF KEITA, BHAKTI FEST, JOSHUA TREE (CA), SEPT 4TH-7TH 2014

image

Salif Keita and his ensemble composed of two female singers, modern solo and traditional guitarists, a Kora player and a Djembe player/percussionist performed fashionably late. The crowd was very delighted with each song as the organic sounds of the ensemble coupled with the great renowned voice of Salif Keita were very soothing. The crowd was also informed of the humanitarian work and organization that Salif Keita is involved in regarding his albino skin condition in order to gather funds to help albinos worldwide especially in Mali where they face ostracism and discrimination.

BHAKTI FEST, JOSHUA TREE (CA), SEPT 4TH-7TH 2014

image

The Bhakti Fest was well-organized and secure without numerous restrictions. As the name of the festival suggests, Indian lifestyle and religions (Hinduism) were the primary focus of the festival with acts such as Krishna Das, Deval Premal, MC Yogi, and Prema Hara though there were invitees such as Malian singer Salif Keita (Mali), American reggae artist Matiyashu and other Sufi Muslim traditional bands. World music and traditional instruments were definitely emphasized with each act. There were also various Yoga workshops all-day long at different stages to the delight of the attendees. The desert climate was mild (78-89 degrees F) and there was ample space for campers. The food selection was excellent especially for health-conscious vegetarian and raw vegan eaters with food vendors who accommodated everyone including traditional American food eaters. There were also numerous art and clothing vendors from across the country who also carried various imported items. The festival was a definite success and went all day and night long with eclectic DJs such as DJ Dredz entertaining dance crowds at night at the main stage.

GEORGE CLINTON & PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC, LONG BEACH FUNK FEST, LONG BEACH (CA), SEPTEMBER 1ST 2014.

image

Great way to celebrate Labor Day at the Long Beach Funk Fest’s new location (Queen Mary’s Events Park) by the ocean with the scenic view of the City’s shore. George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic definitely shocked the crowd with their formal wear (Suits) instead of the psychedelic eccentric look which involves diaper wearing and roller-skating on stage, not to mention George Clinton was wearing a hat instead of his trademark rainbow color wig. The show and performance were excellent nonetheless. The Band is energetic and gives the audience the impression that they’re family. They performed most of their classics including “Let me ride” and “Atomic Dog” which had a huge influence on 90s West Coast hip hop, and particularly Dr. Dre who sampled their music tremendously with his top-selling album “The Chronic”. The event was a bit tightly guarded with police and many restrictions with the No food and chairs policies amongst others. Also there weren’t too many healthy food selections.

LEE SCRATCH PERRY, TWILIGHT CONCERT SERIES, SANTA MONICA (CA), AUGUST 28TH 2014

image

Lee Scratch Perry was backed by the SubAtomic Sound System from NYC led by Emch who opened up for him before he actually joined the stage. Emch incorporated a Nyabinghi drummer, bassist and female background singers in his ensemble and plays the Melodica “Augusto Pablo” style. They opened up the show with classic 70s Dub tracks from King Tubby, Augusto Pablo and Lee Scratch Perry of course. Lee Scratch Perry showed up dressed very eccentrically as usual, which is his trademark. His red suit and hat spoke eloquently of his artistry, cultural background and beliefs by way of the Lion of The Tribe of Judah, paintings and jewelry. Lee Perry played some tracks from his 2003 Grammy-winning album ET as well as Dub Reggae Foundation 70s classics such as “Judgement in Babylon/One Drop” and tracks he produced for the late great Bob Marley such as “Sun is shining”. This was an original Dub Reggae performance which showcases the Reggae tracks and their compositions as opposed to a traditional Reggae show where vocals are predominant. The connoisseur crowd was delighted with the presence and energy of one of Reggae’s founders in Lee Scratch Perry, one of the last remaining building-blocks who stands the test of time along with Burning Spear.

LEE SCRATCH PERRY, TWILIGHT CONCERT SERIES, SANTA MONICA (CA), AUGUST 28TH 2014

imageTwilight Concert Series 2014
Lee “Scratch” Perry
The Godfather of Dub and Reggae has returned…. Grammy Winning Reggae Icon Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s returns with the highly anticipated new LP “REPENTANCE”– with the sexually charged club anthem “Pum Pum,” as the debut single which demonstrates Lee’s mastery of all sounds. The album touches on a multitude of genres ranging from hip-hop & dancehall to club ready dance hits. By now you’ve heard the story that’s been followed by major music outlets from Billboard to Pitchfork. Starting with a chance meeting between Perry and hyper-energetic artist/producer Andrew W.K. at SXSW in 2006 that spawned an unthinkable friendship leading to a musical collaboration that would result in Lee Perry’s latest studio album. “Repentance” is considered the best album he has produced in decades, standing alongside the innovative records of the 60’s & 70’s where Perry placed the DJ in the role of the artist. What Perry created can easily be seen as the prelude to the dance, hip hop and pop music genres which makes it easy to see where artists from Jay Z,,Santogold, Hot Chip, M.I.A., to Spank Rock cut their teeth and found their sound. With “Repentance,” Perry has truly reclaimed the thrown. He continues to influence the musical landscape of today by redefining every genre of music he touches with his unprecedented vision and production expertise. He remains revered by his peers and seen as one of the most influential artists by many of today’s contemporary performers. Guest artists include electronic maven Moby, seminal producer Don Fleming, bassist Josh Werner of Matisyahu, drummer Brian Chippendale of staccato noise duo Lightning Bolt! and adult entertainer Sasha Grey.

Mexico68
Collectively aesthetic! MEXICO68, is a (13) piece afrobeat band based out of Los Angeles’ Eastside, California and is heavily influenced by the polyrhythmic sounds of Nigerian Recording Artist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Africa 70. Dominating the underground airwaves far and wide, MEXICO68 juxtaposes chicano funk with the body-moving and elucidating vibes of Fela. “Afrobeat will be one of the musics of the future” -Miles Davis Afrobeat no go die!

JULIAN MARLEY, REGGAE PON THE MOUNTAIN, TOPANGA CANYON (CA), AUGUST 16TH 2014

image

Julian Marley is an accomplished lead guitarist, following the footsteps of his brother Ziggy and of course defunct father Bob (RIP). He offers great energy with dancing and swindling his long locks as well as vocals that would make Bob proud. Though reserved, he interacts well with the crowd. The Uprising Band did a great job backing him with cutting-edge Reggae music and great vocals. They performed their now classics such as “Systems” and “Boom Draw”, as well as Bob classics such as “Rebel Music” which always make the crowd go crazy especially when sung with that trademark raspy Marley genetic voice.

BLACK UHURU, REGGAE PON THE MOUNTAIN, TOPANGA CANYON (CA), AUGUST 16TH 2014

image

Reggae legendary Band “Black Uhuru” performed with original member Derrick “Duckie” Simpson who hasn’t lost a step in his vocal delivery and radical political message. Newer member Andrew Bees is doing a great job filling voids left by the departure of Mykal Rose and Junior Reid with great vocals. The band performed classics such as “What is life”, “Guess who’s coming to dinner” and “Sinsemilla” much to the delight of the crowd.
